GARY, Ind. – The No. 20 Indiana University South Bend women’s basketball team was spurned by a late run from Indiana University Northwest Wednesday night, Jan. 29, on the road for its third consecutive loss of the season. The Titans, who led by as many as seven in the fourth quarter, were outscored 18-5 in the final five minutes of the contest, falling 67-61.
Freshman Katie Gard converted a jumper at the 5:32 mark in the fourth to put the Titans up 56-49 but the 18-5 run from the RedHawks sealed the upset and handed IUSB its fourth loss of the season.
With the loss, the Titans record dips to 19-4 overall and 11-4 during Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play. It was the second setback on the road this season and third during the month of January.
Foul trouble hurt IUSB with 3:05 remaining, IUN converted 11-of-12 free throws to seal the victory. The final field goal from the RedHawks occurred from Ashley O’Malley at 3:37 left in the contest.
Maddie Gard scored 17 points while senior Kyleigh Kubik added 12 as the pair were the lone Titans in double figures. Gard missed just one field goal on the night, shooting 7-of-8 from the floor, dished out a team-high four assists and gathered five total rebounds.
As a team, IU Northwest held a 46.3 to 38.6 edge in field goal percentage. The RedHawks knocked down 27-of-32 attempts at the charity stripe compared to just IUSB who got to the line just 15 times, converting only eight.
The RedHawks held the advantage in almost every other category on the night, including bench points, 23-20, points in the paint, 34-26 and second chance points, seven to three.
IU South Bend looks to snap its three-game slump at home on Saturday, Feb. 1, hosting Trinity International inside the Student Activities Center at 1 p.m.
