TU Compiles 17 Runs, Grabs Win in Home-Opener


UPLAND, Ind. – The TU baseball squad (8-1) competed at Winterholter Field for the first time this season, defeating Olivet Nazarene (0-1) in the afternoon contest. The Trojans notched a 17-14 win off the back of three home runs on Tuesday.


Six runs in the bottom of the fourth gave Taylor control, as 10-consecutive batters reached base. Christian McGill got the ball rolling with a two-run shot for his first homer of the year. A single from Conner Crawford tied the game at six runs apiece, before Jacob Morris pushed TU ahead with a pair of RBI. Kade Vander Molen knocked in the final run of the inning, handing the host team a 9-6 advantage.


The Taylor offense came to play, picking up six extra-base hits, 14 total hits and a .378 batting average. Five Trojans notched multiple hits, including Crawford leading the way with three hits and a pair of doubles and walks. Nick Rusche reached base twice, scoring three times and plating two teammates.


Runs came early and often as the Purple and Gold touched home in seven-of-eight innings on offense. TU held its largest lead at 15-8 right after a three-run seventh frame.


Tanner Kolbe launched his first long ball of the 2020 campaign on Tuesday, while going two-for-four with three runs scored. Tied for eighth in the NAIA, TJ Bass smacked his fourth home run in his sophomore season. On the year, Bass has slugged .833 through nine games.


On the mound, Justin Pettit logged the win, delivering 1.1 innings in relief with two strikeouts.


Taylor will return to action with a three-game series against Saint Francis (Ill.) (0-3) this weekend.
