LEBANON, Tenn. – In its first appearance of the season, the Indiana University South Bend softball came up short in both games of the doubleheader at Cumberland University on Friday, Feb. 21. The Titans were swept by the Phoenix in game one 8-0 before falling 3-2 in game two.
Game One (CU 8, IUSB 0) – The Titans conceded a pair of runs in the second and third innings before allowing two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth inning to drop its first game of the season.
Offensively, IU South Bend registered five hits from sophomores Kaylee Darnell and Brittany Vanderbrink, junior Shelby Baker, and seniors Nicole Grazioli and Kat Bessler.
Junior Becca Stevens threw 4.0 innings allowing seven runs off four hits while walking one and striking out three different Phoenix batters. Senior Ashley Cox came in relief of Stevens throwing 1.1 innings that saw four hits, four runs to go along with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.
Game Two (CU 3, IUSB 2) – The Titans gave up a 2-0 lead after conceding three runs in the bottom of the fifth that led to a one-run loss and pushed IU South Bend to a 0-2 record to start the season.
IUSB put together consistent at bats through the first three frames to push across a pair of runs. Senior Kiah Ferrell recorded one of her two RBI to score junior Savanna Schmitz who reached on a throwing error by the Phoenix third baseman to put the Titans up 1-0 in the first. In the third, IUSB added another run to take a 2-0 lead after Ferrell homered to right center. The homerun was the first for the Titans this season and the fifth of her career.
The Phoenix led off the fifth inning with a single that eventually led to three hits and three runs scored to seal the victory.
Ferrell suffered her first loss of the season, pitching a complete 5.0 innings that allowed three runs off six hits. The senior saw 21 batters that led to one walk and two strikeouts.
IU South Bend remains in Tennessee to face the Phoenix tomorrow, Feb. 22 for a doubleheader series finale that is slated to begin at 12 p.m. (EST) at the CU Softball Field.
