Baseball Shines at Texarkana Sweeping First Doubleheader of the Season​

TEXARKANA, Texas. – In the lone star state, Indiana University South Bend earned its first sweep of the season on Friday, Feb. 21 at Texas A&M-Texarkana defeating the Eagles, 2-1 in game one and 9-4 in game two. With the pair of victories, the Titans improve to 5-5 overall.

 

Game One (IUSB 2, Texarkana 1) – In what turned out to be a pitcher’s duel, freshman Robbie Berger was dominant once again on the mound for the Titans en route to a 2-1 victory in game one of the series.

Berger threw 6.0 innings allowing one runs on seven hits while striking out a career-high seven. In 25 batters faced the right-hander gave up two extra base hits and didn’t walk a single Eagle Batter. With the performance on the mound Berger earned his second win and improved his record to 2-0 this season.

Sophomore Logan Young came in relief of Berger and shut down the Eagles offense to earn the save, going 1.0 innings allowing just one hit and striking out one batter to keep Texarkana from evening the ball game.

Young and Matthew Miller were the lone Titans to register RBIs in game one as both brought runs home in the bottom of the seventh inning. Junior transfer Zach Dehn and Young scored the two runs for the Titans in the low scoring affair.

Game Two (IUSB 9, Texarkana 4) – Guided by powerful performances on the mound and at the plate the IU South Bend baseball team captured a game two 9-4 victory and its first sweep of the season.

The Titan offense was led by Young who went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, two runs scored and one RBI. Young registered his first home run of the season and first for the Titans during 2020, a shot over center field in the top of the seventh to give IUSB a 9-4 lead.

  1. Miller, senior Vance Gutierrez and freshman Logan Smith had stellar plays at the plate as they each registered two hits in game two. Both Miller and Gutierrez went 2-for-2 while Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.

IUSB was dominant on the mound against the Eagles giving up four earned runs on six hits while striking out nine. In his third start of the season, junior Matt Smith threw 3.2 innings allowing four runs on five hits and striking out a career-high five batters. Freshman Zack Dobos earned his first save of his career going 3.1 innings giving up just one hit while striking out four.

Texarkana grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring two off three hits and two errors before the Titans evened the score at two with a pair of runs in the top of the second. The Eagles notched two more in the second and third until M. Miller and Smith scored in the fourth and fifth.

In the sixth the Titans scored four runs on three hits to regain the lead highlighted by Smith’s double down the right field line to drive home Jake Dykstra and Gutierrez. Senior TJ DeHerrera ripped a double to right immediately after to register his first hit of the game.

Young’s homer in the seventh on a 0-0 count sealed the IUSB victory as the Titans earned their first sweep of the season.  

IU South Bend remains in Texas to face the Eagles tomorrow, Feb. 22 for a doubleheader series finale that is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the George Dobson Field.
